The homes are located in the Central City historic district, an area that was first developed in the 1830s, it is made up mainly of shotgun houses (70% of the historic homes). These properties are each 1750 square feet, on 3100 square foot lots. FEMA has issued a public notice regarding the renovations made to the historic uptown Ursuline Academy primary building, here is the official FEMA notice:
The high winds and heavy rains of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the subsequent widespread flooding damaged many buildings in Orleans Parish. In the aftermath of the hurricanes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is issuing this public notice as a part of its responsibilities under 36 CFR Part 800, the regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. This notice applies to activities carried out by FEMA’s Public Assistance (P A) program implemented under the authority of the Robert T. Stafford Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 5152-5206.

FEMA has identified that the Ursuline Academy Primary Building is a contributing resource to the Uptown New Orleans National Register Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 3, 1985 because of its state level of architectural significance. FEMA has determined there is no opportunity to avoid or minimize adverse effects due to the completion of and the irreversibility of the work.

A major restoration of the 1934 Art Deco airport is underway and expected to be completed in mid 2012.

The structure was encased in cement and converted to a fall-out shelter in the 1960s, and post-Katrina historic preservation funds for historic preservation have made possible a restoration to its 1934 condition. The exterior work is largely completed, which included the reconstruction of sculptures and relief panels, and the interior renovation is set to begin in August. The central atrium, its height cut in half with a low ceiling in the 60s, will be returned to its original condition. Many of the original details, such as doors, murals, and handrails, were protected and will be returned to the building. Also restored will be the once regal Walnut Room, an entertainment venue and dining room.
