Saunders, Tax Incentives Director for the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation will share information about tax incentives available to help property owners restore historic properties.  Bridget Joseph, Program Consultant CLEAResult will discuss Entergy New Orleans’ Efficiency Programs to help property owners save money on their utility bills.

Thursday, October 22, 2009: Renovators’ Happy Hour goes to Mid-City 5:30pm-7:00pm, Talk begins at 6:00pm 213 S. Clark $5 for PRC members, $7 for non-members This wood framed, two story home with bracketed details is the Mid-City renovation by Jennifer and Erich Weishaupt, 2008 Renaissance Award winners. Pre-Katrina, this was a blighted 3-unit house. With little historic detail still in place when they began work on this early 20th century home, the Weishaupt’s have restored both historic features and character throughout, while working under a budget. With a discussion on repairing historic wood windows. Virgina Blanque will present the Mid-City neighborhood.

Light refreshments will be provided by The Ruby Slipper Cafe www.therubyslippercafe.net. Wine Included.

PRC’s Renovators’ Happy Hour goes to Mid-City

(in Mid-City)

Join the PRC to celebrate the renovation of this previously blighted, wood-framed, two-story home that has been carefully restored to its historic charm.

This early-20th-century home, owned by Erich and Jennifer Weishaupt, was a blighted multi-plex before Katrina; the Weishaupts have since taken great care to restore both historic features and character throughout.

The program will also include a discussion on repairing historic wood windows, as well as a presentation on the Mid-City neighborhood by Virgina Blanque.

The Weishaupts were the recipients of the 2008 Renaissance Awards — honoring individuals who have undertaken major renovations while staying true to the original architecture and history of the building.

Light refreshments will be provided by The Ruby Slipper Cafe, wine included.

EVENT OVERVIEW

This special Renovators’ Happy Hour celebrates the renovation of a beloved St. Charles Avenue landmark – the historic Pontchartrain Hotel.

Speakers:
Peter Trapolin, AIA and Sandy Staub, ASID, will give an overview of the hotel’s renovation, which includes the creation of 82 unique apartments for senior living.

A neighborhood representative will deliver a history of the historic Garden District.

Camille Strachan, Trustee Emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will discuss the New Market Tax Credit program.

Live piano music, beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

EVENT OVERVIEW

This exclusive event for PRC and Ogden members will illustrate the value and integrity of architecture from our recent past.

Speaker:
Arthur Q. Davis, born in 1920 in New Orleans, is a modern architect whose long and prolific career has earned fame and respect both locally and around the world. He studied under masters at Tulane University’s School of Architecture as well as Harvard University. He has been a pioneer in the fields of modern architecture and design in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast; and although he is internationally renowned, he remains deeply rooted in the culture of his native city.

Moderator:
J. Richard Gruber is director of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. He and Arthur Q. Davis co-wrote a book, It Happened by Design: The Life and Work of Arthur Q. Davis, published by University Press of Mississippi in April 2009.

Panelists:
- Jack Davis, editor, writer, and board member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
- Albert Ledner, modernist architect and former apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright
- Wayne Troyer, award-winning architect and board member of the PRC
- Elliot Perkins, executive director of the Historic District Landmarks Commission

Presented by the PRC’s Membership Education Committee, chaired by Julie Habetz.

Speakers:
Tammany Baumgarten, landscaping contractor and president of the Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans, will discuss landscaping basics.

John Cassidy, local landscape artisan, will present on rain gardens, sustainable drainage techniques, and cisterns.

Also featuring properties for sale in Broadmoor, presented by realtor Kelli Wright.

PRC Members’ Tour

“New Orleans Revitalization”

April 5, 2009- Sunday from 2:00pm-5:00pm. Join us for a narrated bus tour of significant and positive rebuilding efforts in St Roch, Holy Cross and the Ninth Ward. Projects will include the PRC’s HOME AGAIN!, Operation Comeback and Rebuilding Together. See the Global Green project house, Brad Pitt’s Make it Right and the incredible historic restoration at Jackson Barracks. (It will bring you back to Antebellum times!) Some surprise guests will join us for a private escorted tour segment. Presented by the PRC’s Membership Education Committee. Refreshments are included at a special stop. Tour will originate at the PRC and is $25.00.
