Save this house! Historic Treme “Jaeger House” at 1027 N Roman Street
ByThe historic Jager House at 1027 N Roman is in danger of demolition once again, despite strong efforts to save it.
The property, dating back to the 1850′s, is “essentially a two-story extension of the creole cottage,” as described in its listing in the Treme volume of the New Orleans Architecture series, which further states that this type of house, with gabled sides and second-level galleries on the front and rear, was common in the creole suburbs in the mid 19th century. The house is featured in the New Orleans Architectural Series, Volume VI: Faubourg Treme and the Bayou Road for its unique styling.
St. Peter Claver parish plans to demolish the building for the expansion of its playground, if there is no interest in relocating the house. Councilwoman Kristin Palmer is working to get the house moved, but the estimated $50,000 cost seems to have deterred potential buyers.
According to the article in the Times Picayune, the owner has applied to HDLC for the demolition of the house, which has been on the agenda many times over the years and denied every time.
