Annunciation Church in Faubourg New Marigny
One of the oldest parishes in New Orleans, Annunciation Church was founded in the 1830′s when Bernard de Marigny acquired the Marigny Plantation, a large tract of land along the river and below the French Quarter. The area was settled by French Creoles, German immigrants and free people of color between the 1830s and 1880s. The church, completed in 1922, is located in the New Marigny National Register Historic District, also called Faubourg St. Roch. Annunciation was closed in 2001 when several downtown churches in Marigny, New Marigny and Bywater were consolidated, and the church has since been vacant. The Archdiocese has proposed to also demolish the rectory and the hall with no redevelpment plan for the site.
